Aboriginal Art Exhibition
30 April to 14 June 2025 I Free Entry to Exhibition
From the shimmering waters of the Roper River, the barramundi’s life unfolds—a dance of renewal and resilience, moving with the tides of nature and tradition. This powerful life cycle is at the heart of ‘Lipwurrunga’, a community exhibition showcasing Les Huddleston’s life and work, offering a vivid tribute to the landscapes, the wonders of nature and traditional stories of Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.
Through vibrant oil paintings, traditional wood carvings and didgeridoos, this exhibition connects ancient knowledge and practices with contemporary creativity and expression. Each work explores themes of sustainability, culture, and the deep and constant connection between people and Country.
Based in Melbourne for part of each year, the artist shares his art and wisdom with urban Aboriginal families, students and the broader Boroondara community, fostering understanding and unity. This exhibition is a celebration of tradition and a step forward in Australia’s reconciliation journey.

After a successful showing in 2024 Les Huddleston Lipwurrunga returns to display his works from April until June 2025 at the Town Hall Gallery in Hawthorn.
Lipwurrunga (Les Huddleston), a renowned Aboriginal artist, spiritual healer, and talented didgeridoo maker and player, welcomes you to view his artwork, carvings, Didgeridoos, and weavings from the desserts of Arnhem Land.
Lipwurrunga is an excellent resource and a role model to the community and his family. He also works as a Cultural Ambassador, working closely with displaced Aboriginal youth and the isolated elderly. Lipwurrunga is the nephew of Gertie Huddleston, the famous artist from the Ngukurr Aboriginal community.
From his traditional country of Roper River (East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory). Lipwurrunga (Les Huddleston) was born and grew up near Penrith, NSW. His parents and older brother were moved to Mulgoa Mission, from Groote Eylandt after the bombing of Darwin in 1941 during WWII.
Lipwurrunga moved back to Darwin in 1971 as he felt it was important to re-connect with the country from which his family had been dispossessed. It was there that he sought permission and guidance to paint from the Ngardi elders and began his career as an artist. His family returned to Ngukurr one year later.
Lipwurrunga is a prominent Aboriginal artist and for more than 35 years, he has explored land, water, identity and healing themes through his art and life. He an accomplished painter nationally and internationally and has been a Cultural Adviser for over 35 years.
Married to Beverly for 35 years, with four daughters and 11 grandchildren, Lipwurrunga has profound joy in sharing the rich and artistic tapestry of his Indigenous culture.

Lipwurrunga collaborates regularly with musicians fusing classical western music with the didj (didgeridoo).
A role model for his community and family, Lipwurrunga is also the nephew of Gertie Huddleston, the famous artist from Ngukurr Aboriginal community.
